Living in the Canggu region of Bali for more than a year and a half, Elisabeth would like to share with you her best discoveries and addresses on the island to date. We all know the book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, but is this still the Bali of today?
THE YOGA BARN
Take a yoga class at Yoga Barn, Ubud. This is the place to be for yogis. Although I'm not a big fan of yoga, The Yoga Barn was able to change my mind. The classes are varied, in a magical setting in the middle of the rice fields, offering a soothing and authentic experience.
MANA & SURF VILLAS
Go see the sunset at Mana, Uluwatu . Located in the heart of Uluwatu, Mana is much more than just a restaurant. It is a true sanctuary of relaxation with a magnificent infinity pool offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The view is breathtaking, and the swimming pool is accessible to everyone, whether you are a restaurant customer or not. A special mention for the tuna poke bowl, simply incredible.
ZIN HOTELS & SPA
Treat yourself to a Balinese massage at Zin Hotels, Canggu. The Balinese massage is very relaxing. At Zin Hotels, each massage session is a personalized experience, in a luxurious and soothing setting. Ask Partini, her hands are magical. I swear by it.
PURA LUHUR
Visit the Balinese temples . Uluwatu, perched on a steep cliff, offers not only impressive architecture but also spectacular views of the ocean. There you can attend the Kecak dance, a ritual choreography where participants enter a sort of trance. Please note, you must reserve your place on the same day. Also watch out for monkeys, they tend to steal your bags and objects. Do not take anything of value with you, otherwise you risk leaving empty-handed. Also note that a menstruating woman is not allowed to enter a temple.
NASI GORENG & GADO-GADO
Taste nasi goreng and gado-gado, two typical Indonesian dishes that are essential in Bali. Nasi goreng is a dish made from fried rice and vegetables, served with a fried egg on top. Gado-gado, on the other hand, is a crunchy vegetable salad with Satay (peanut) sauce, best enjoyed at local warungs for an authentic Balinese cuisine experience.
JIMBARAN FISH MARKET
Visit the Jimbaran fish market. Open until late in the evening, it is a lively local market where you can buy fresh fish and seafood from local fishermen. Then, ask to have them grilled on site, then enjoy them on the beach, accompanied by tasty sauces and fragrant rice.
LUMA
Dinner at Luma , a Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of Canggu. The concept ? Share good Mediterranean dishes around good cocktails or even a small glass of wine, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
IL SALOTTO
Or at Il Salotto , an Italian and festive restaurant in the heart of Uluwatu. Little sister of La Barraca restaurant, Il Salotto transforms into a nightclub at the end of the second service, offering a lively evening in a warm and welcoming setting.
BINGIN BEACH
Enjoy Bingin Beach . My favorite weekend getaway is to Bingin Beach. It's about a good hour from Canggu, and after descending the 200-step staircase you'll find a beautiful little cove at the base of the cliffs, perfect for relaxing and watching the sunset.
SIDEMEN
Admire the landscape of Sideman . The terraced rice fields of Sideman, which overlook Mount Agung, offer, in my opinion, the most beautiful panorama of the island. You can also immerse yourself in rural Balinese life by staying in one of the many eco-lodges offering an authentic and peaceful experience away from the tourist hustle and bustle.
